How meditation taught an old dog new tricks.

I am hardly the stereotype for anything that might be considered woo-woo.

A graduate of Yale and Columbia, I am more Brooks Brothers than tie-dyed. I had a childhood where sitting was frowned upon when you could be up and about doing something more productive.

So the die was cast. All these influences, from parents to schooling, combined to teach me to think big. Once out in the world, I learn from others how to turn ideas into actions, and action into movements.

From all outward appearances at age 75, I was viewed as a “success” I had helped design and implement public service programs for 8 U.S. Presidents. My resume was filled with building ideas from the ground up into major programs affecting millions of lives. My career accomplishments stood out and, on the home front, my family and three children were thriving.

Then a personal crisis created debilitating stress. My life was turned upside down. The solution came in a form that was astoundingly simple and profoundly life- changing: Meditation.

ABOUT FACE. Veterans Transform Their Lives… And So Does The Filmmaker

The stories of lives saved through the transformative power of mindfulness can almost seem like the stuff of a Hollywood movie.

Maybe that’s why GIFT founder Sam Beard had the inspiration to enlist his lifelong friend Rupert Hitzig to help war veterans record on camera their tales of shattered lives miraculously restored. A director and producer with numerous major motion pictures to his credit, Rupert proved to be the perfect choice and not just for his cinematic expertise.

Smitten by Sam’s enthusiasm, Rupert had no personal experience with meditation and came to the project with an open mind but with a healthy dose of skepticism. In the days before leaving for Delaware, he approached the shoot at the Wilmington Veteran’s Administration like he would any professional job, charting out meticulously the production schedule, interview times and crew details.

Before he even got to the airport for his return trip home, Rupert quickly spread the word on his cell phone, with excitement and joy of what he captured over the course of the days. The one-on-one interviews with his subjects and footage of their group session would not only make for a compelling short video, he explained.

He could only hope that mind-expanding effect he experienced himself would be shared by the viewers of the finished product.

Here it is…see for yourself!

Delaware – Fast Becoming The First Mindful State

No other initiative better illustrates GIFT’s purpose than its comprehensive effort to make Delaware The First Mindful State. Delaware was the first state to ratify the United States Constitution and it is known across American for this leadership as “The First State.” With its mission “Multiply Mindfulness Worldwide,” the non-profit GIFT is using Delaware as the proving ground that mindfulness/meditation elevates human behavior.

Again, Delaware is an important leader and has become “The First Mindful State.”

More than 150 Delaware stakeholders from the public and private sectors are supporting this project since its inception in June 2016 to implement scientifically validated technologies to solve societal challenges and improve quality of life. Primarily, this GIFT coalition is made up of organizations working in education, mental health, public policy, business development and community outreach and government. Examples include the Wilmington Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, the Delaware State Chamber of Commerce, Delaware public schools and community colleges, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware, The West End Neighborhood House, the Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health, the Latin American Community Center of Wilmington, Zero to 3 Early Childhood Development, plus many more.

Therapist and pastoral counselor Dr. James Walsh heads this initiative.
